Aug REC Job Outlook update

During August we experienced a 20% increase in new vacancies coming to the agency and that the number of vacancies being advertised locally on the job boards was much higher than the previous few months. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) latest report on jobs stated that early August saw some 126,000 new job postings which is the highest number since the start of lockdown.

Vacancies have increased across the UK as whole with the exception of just 5 counties. Additionally, the REC’s report states the demand for temporary workers has increased from 53% pre lockdown to 67% to the end of July. 

This mirrors what we are finding at Cathedral Appointments and the call for temporary workers looks set to increase further as businesses are valuing a more flexible workforce generally.  With the increase in permanent vacancies it seems there is also some light at the end of the tunnel for permanent placements.  With furlough being phased out over the next few months we believe redundancies and the number of people seeking work will continue to rise in the short term but we are hopeful of a continued steady increase in the number of both permanent and temporary vacancies moving forward.

The increase in demand for employees over the last month has mainly been for skilled technical and specialist positions particularly in the Engineering and IT sectors as well as a handful of office support roles.  Our conversations with clients have generally been cautiously optimistic. It is fair to say that things can still change rapidly and avoiding a second lockdown will be key to this.

The South West seems to continue to enjoy low rates of infection and our network of clients continues to be extremely agile and able to evolve to respond to the new normal.
