Attracting and retaining international tech talent

Global competition for talent is seeing employers navigating new territory to attract the vital tech skills they need in a post-pandemic era. With the South West fast becoming a haven for new tech firms hungry for software engineers, programmers, network security specialists and data science experts, dipping into the international talent pool is a logical next step.

Let’s explore what is needed to draw in and retain the international tech talent of tomorrow.

Bringing tech talent from national and international markets to the South West

According to Business Wire, tech talent in the South West is at a premium with 1,445 limited tech firms set up in 2021, increasing by 25% in 2022. A key factor for tech talent today is what commitment companies have towards Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) issues.

HR Magazine reported that ESG commitments are a ‘huge draw’ for candidates, many of whom are using transferable skills to move around the world for companies who align themselves with similar ethical stances. Tech employees need to feel valued too, therefore demonstrating coaching, training and structured career development is important. They will also be scoping out the tech scene you operate in.

What would attract candidates from afar?

All candidates want an environment whey they can learn, mix and share information with fellow professionals in a welcoming community. Places like Exeter and other areas in the South West are therefore ideal for candidates who are looking to bring their skills to the UK but also want to feel a part of a receiving group of likeminded people, and a thriving tech hub.

Not only this, but wellbeing benefits, transparency and flexible work patterns also attract young tech talent. Candidates are looking for a job where they can make a difference, projects that offer challenges and a workplace culture that allows them to create and develop meaningful outcomes.

How can you attract candidates from big cities to the beautiful smaller city of Exeter?

Exeter has a lot to offer new tech talent, not only is it an interesting historical city, but it is also an up-and-coming tech hub. It is home to a host of tech initiatives, including the Met Office’s supercomputer, the UK’s fastest growing research university (the University of Exeter) and the innovation centre at Exeter Science Park

Such commitment to the future of technology means the city is an ideal location for international job seekers looking to build new industry relationships and surround themselves with fellow tech professionals.

You don’t have to leave smaller cities for big jobs – there are plenty of opportunities here in the South West

It is a total misconception that because the South West does not have a London, Birmingham or Manchester within it, tech talent will not be drawn to the region. But by showcasing and sharing a company’s commitment to diversity, the environment, the provision of high-quality training, and involvement in tech projects, small cities can bring in the best international talent.

In fact, smaller cities like Exeter can often spell greater career opportunities for some tech professionals – a chance to dive head-first into an organisation where they can truly influence business development and its outcomes. In turn, employers can expect not only a larger pool of talent, but increased potential for greater diversity and perspectives, a factor that’s becoming ever-more critical in the development of successful technology.
