Family Lawyer Job Description
As a Family Lawyer, you will be responsible for providing legal advice and representation in matters such as divorce, child custody and financial settlements. Many Family Lawyers choose to specialise in providing advice on one of two key areas of law: pre-nuptial agreements, cohabitation, separation and divorce, or Children’s Law. Children’s can include advising on parental rights and responsibilities, child custody arrangements and contact disputes. Some firms focus solely on working with privately funded clients and others are contracted to provide services to clients who are eligible to access Legal Aid.
Family Lawyer Average Salary Expectations
The average salary for a Family Lawyer in the South West is around £50,000. This can range from £45,000 to £55,000 depending on the size of the firm, location and profile and clients, and potentially whether the firm is specialist in Family Law.

- Working with sensitivity with clients who may be experiencing heightened emotions of distress, loss, frustration or anger, to understand their specific circumstances, requirements and preferences.
- Working to resolve complex, challenging and emotive issues on behalf of your client which may necessitate working with agencies such as the Police, Social Services and Health with the utmost professionalism and confidentiality.
- Actively engaging in business development and networking activities with IFAs, wealth and property management professionals in order to generate referrals and increase workflows.
- Supporting less experienced members of the team as they develop and increase their confidence in working with clients.
- Keeping up to date with practice developments, and potentially working to maintain accreditations with Resolution and/or Children’s Panel.
- Licensed to practice law in the UK, with two or more years’ PQE within private practice.
- Experience of working with a range of clients on Family matters including divorce and financial remedy or Children’s law.
- A genuine commitment to providing exemplary client care to every client in an emotionally demanding area of law, being sensitive to the situation of each individual you are working with.
- Interest and enthusiasm in engaging with business development activities, recognising the importance of creating referral networks to support private client work generation.
- An effective communicator with a collaborative approach to team working and supporting less experienced colleagues.
